Cypak Compliancy Connection powers Stora Enso Pharma DDSi

Stora Enso, a leading producer of pharmaceutical packaging boards, has launched  Pharma DDSi , the first intelligent pharmaceutical packaging solution to use Cypak’s Compliancy Connection.

Compliancy Connection is a standard low-cost electronic module built around a single RFID microchip and is designed to be embedded in pharmaceutical packaging. Electronic sensors are printed onto the packaging to detect when a dose of medicine is removed.

Non-compliance is increasingly recognized as a major problem in health care. Experts believe that over 50% of people do not take their medication as prescribed, causing tens of thousands of avoidable admissions to hospitals and care homes.

There are many reasons for non-compliancy. Memory lapses result in people skipping a dose or even taking multiple doses. Some people worry about side-effects, others misinterpret the instructions on how to take the medication. Sometimes children take medicines that are not intended for them, and older people struggle to open the packaging. Lack of objective compliancy data may even cause doctors to switch medication or increase dosage levels unnecessarily.

Pharma DDSi is a holistic solution that improves compliancy, providing objective data to caregivers and patients alike:
-       Electronics embedded in the package provide reminders, record medication events, and transmit the medication history to the care-giver.
-       A printed questionnaire captures the patient’s feelings when taking medication. Direct communication to a specialist warns of side-effects and enables early intervention.
-       DDSi is a carton solution.  Clear instructions for use are printed on the packaging.
-       Stora Enso also offers child resistant and senior friendly packaging solutions.

Pharma DDSi works with a variety of database solutions including PackAgent Compliance Monitoring software. This system is used for tracking and tracing the packages, capturing the compliance data and sharing results.

Per Nathanaelson, Cypak CEO, comments: “The low-cost electronic solution provided by Cypak, combined with Stora Enso’s expertise, is further opening the way for widespread global adoption of intelligent pharmaceutical packaging. ”

Ismo Saarinen, Director, Pharmaceutical Solutions, Stora Enso, comments: “Pharma DDSi is a ground breaking solution. Together with Cypak we will continue to drive innovation, affordability, and connectivity.”
