Red Herring picks Cypak as top technology company

The Swedish Industrial Development Fund and IT Provider invest MSEK 30 in Cypak, a technology company which is developing the world's first throwaway computer made of paper. The technology has received considerable attention world wide, and has been licensed to a leading North American packaging company, among others.

Cypak has developed a new intelligent RFID technology based on a microchip which can be integrated into throwaway packaging and through this make the packaging smart, interactive and communicative. The technology has already been licensed to the North American packaging company MeadWestvaco for use with the intelligent packaging of medication and has been successfully tested for transportation security by the Swedish and German postal services.

"This new capital means that we can accelerate the work we have undertaken with our partners to further develop and promote the technology on the international market. The fact that the Swedish Industrial Development Fund is investing in Cypak gives the added advantage of access to an international network and to industrial experience which will be very beneficial to Cypak as it enters this stage of its development," says Jakob Ehrensvärd, Cypak's CEO.

"We have been very impressed by Cypak?s technology and the international attention the company has received. The innovative RFID technology, patented by Cypak, shows huge potential in an expanding market area," says Anna Söderblom, Investment Manager, Swedish Industrial Development Fund.

"Cypak's business concept, in which it licenses out its technology, is very interesting; it makes it possible for companies in different business areas to convert their otherwise static objects into intelligent, communicative carriers of information," says Anders Lindqvist, representing the Cypak partner, IT Provider, which has invested in Cypak from its start.

Cypak was founded by Jakob and Stina Ehrensvärd in 1999. The company has developed and has patented a new intelligent RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology which can be integrated into simple items like packaging, envelopes, plastic cards, tape etc. which can then collect, store and transfer information wirelessly. The technology provides more functionality and greater security than is presently available. The company's business concept is to license technology and sell component parts. Development and integration is today taking place in close cooperation with system integrators and product companies within many different areas of business. Cypak is now owned by its founders, IT Provider and The Swedish Industrial Development Fund. The Chairman of the Board is Mats Wennberg, previously CEO of Microsoft Norden.
