Background

Cypak was founded in 1999 by Jakob and Stina Ehrensvärd. While conducting clinical trials of new pharmaceuticals, the Ehrensvärds identified the opportunity to apply new electronic technologies to improve both compliance and adherence.

With a combination of printed electronics, rfid communications, embedded chips, and some very smart firmware, Cypak transforms a pharmaceutical package into an active electronic data-capturing and feedback device.

The market was positively surprised and Cypak was honored by winning many awards.

In the early days Cypak worked closely with pharmaceutical companies such as Novartis and with MeadWestVaco (MWV), a global leader for packaging solutions.  Practical solutions were developed to meet market requirements and master mass production techniques..

Cypak learned a lot about medication compliance and adherence.  Today Cypak is considered a global authority on patient monitoring.

The technical competence of the company developed in parallel.  World class capability for secure data communication led to the spin-off of Yubico in 2007.  And in 2008, the unique expertise in embedding electronics in board led to the consolidation of a strategic partnership with Stora Enso, the world leader in paper and board production.  In 2009, the company released seamless communications with NFC enabled mobile phones.

Major investments have been made recently to create a single chip solution for patient monitoring which is delivered in high volume and low cost.

The product focus is enlarged to provide connectivity and recording solutions for manufacturers of Continua certified vital sign monitors – blood pressure, glucose, weight scales, etc.   To monitor the effectiveness of treatment, it makes sense to measure both the inputs in the form of medication and the outputs in the form of vital signs.

Staying true to the ideals of the founders, Cypak has a leading role in global open standards.  Cypak chairs the IEEE/ISO 11073-10472 group developing international standards, leads the medication monitoring activities in the Continua Health Alliance of over 200 companies in Connected Health, and serves on the board of directors in the Healthcare Compliance Packaging Council for Europe.
